NEWARK, N.J. -- Martin Brodeur is staying with the New Jersey Devils. Despite speculation that the Devils were considering dealing the NHLs career leader in wins, the 41-year-old will finish his 20th consecutive season in New Jersey after Wednesdays trade deadline expired. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello refused to say whether any teams either inquired about Brodeurs availability or they offered him to anyone. He also refused to say whether Brodeur had waived his no-trade clause or given him a list of teams to which he would agree to be traded. Lamoriello blamed the recent trade speculation about Brodeur on the media. "Its just a shame that without no substance at different times and no facts that people say things," Lamoriello said. The longtime Devils executive, however, refused to say whether Brodeur was a topic in his trade discussions. "Why are we dealing in hypotheticals, I have no idea," Lamoriello said. "Its not the case. So why we react and try to look for something thats no there and create a story out of nothing." Brodeur did not attend the Devils optional practice Wednesday and he was not immediately available for comment. The NHLs career leader in wins, minutes played, games played, losses and shutouts had fuelled some of the trade talk by saying he was not happy with playing time in recent weeks. Counting his 4-3 win over Detroit on Tuesday, he had started two of the Devils last 10 games, playing a backup to Cory Schneider. Brodeur started the season as the Devils top goaltender but he has taken a back seat to Schneider. Devils coach Pete DeBoer said there isnt a No. 1 goaltender for the Devils. "I think Cory grabbed the ball here prior to the Olympic break and ran with it for a while," DeBoer said. "Prior to that, Marty ran with it for a while. So I think its been there for either of them to grab and they have at different respective times. And thats the case moving forward." Brodeur has a special place in the hearts of Devils fans. They chanted "Mar-tee, Mar-tee" at times during the win over the Red Wings, in case Tuesday was the last game for the man who has been awarded the Vezina Trophy as the leagues top goalie four times and is a three-time Stanley Cup champion while playing his entire career with the Devils. "I dont think you ever replace Marty," Schneider said after Wednesdays workout. "I am not him. I am not going to be him. I will try to be myself and do my thing and take some of the stuff that I learned from a lot of great people that I played with along the way, him being one of them." Brodeurs contract expires after this season and he could explore free agency next season. In their only move of the day, the Devils acquired forward Tuomo Ruutu from the Carolina Hurricanes for centre Andrei Loktionov and a conditional third-round pick in 2017. "He does the things we like to see, he gets right in your face," Lamoriello said of Ruutu, who has five goals and 11 assists in 57 games this season and waived a no-trade clause to come to New Jersey. The 31-year-old Finn has shown scoring ability. He has 138 goals and 186 assists in 606 career games over 10 seasons with Chicago and Carolina. "Our intention certainly was to try and get a top nine forward with a lot of grit, who competes and who has a habit of playing in big games," Lamoriello said. "Weve played against him enough over the years. We feel good about it." The Hurricanes have agreed to retain some of Ruutus salary, which is $5 million annually. Loktionov had four goals and eight assists in 48 games. He was acquired from Los Angeles in 2013. Lamoriello is confident that Devils can find a way to get back to the playoffs after missing them last season. "I think some of our players are just starting to find themselves after the break, and a couple of others who are ready to achieve," he said. "We are a team. We play like a team. Our coaching staff has done a great job of maximizing that. Once you get in the playoffs, its anyones chance but first you have to get there. Were right there in the mix. We have to win. Ii cant put it any simpler than that." Justin Morneau Jersey . - After spending the morning in the hospital, Logan Couture gave the San Jose Sharks the spark they needed. Glen Perkins Jersey . Ellis have avoided arbitration, agreeing to a one-year contract. With LeBron James sticking around and some of the NBAs best players joining him, the U.S. basketball team could be better than ever. "The roster itself is the strongest roster weve ever had," USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said. Even without Kobe Bryant, who had said the 2012 London Olympics was his last international competition, its a formidable group. James and 10 others from the 2012 U.S. Olympic team are remaining in the national team pool, joined by a group of newcomers hoping for their first chance at gold. USA Basketball selected 28 players Thursday to choose from for the World Cup of Basketball this summer in Spain and the 2016 Rio Olympics. Carmelo Anthony was also chosen, giving him and James a chance to play in a fourth Olympics and win a third gold medal. They wont play this summer, but might still put on the red, white and blue one more time down the road. "We really do want to give some of the younger players an opportunity in Spain this summer, but they want to remain there and stay in the mix for being on our roster in Rio," Colangelo said on a conference call. Also selected from the 2012 gold medallists were: Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Kevin Love, Deron Williams, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Tyson Chandler and Andre Iguodala. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is back to lead the Americans, as he has done since 2005. The other players picked were: Chicagos Derrick Rose, Houstons Dwight Howard, the Clippers Blake Griffin, Indianas Paul George; Stephen Curry, David Lee and Klay Thompson of Golden State; LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard of Portland; Sacramentos DeMarcus Cousins, Kyrie Irving of Cleveland; San Antonios Kawhi Leonard; Washingtons Bradley Beal; Atlantas Kyle Korver; Detroits Andre Drummond; Denvers Kenneth Faried; and Utahs Gordon Hayward. Its an experienced, star-filled group -- it includes the NBAs top 10 scorers -- and the Americans stressed it will be "fluid," meaning more players could be added over the next three years. And unlike recent U.S. teams, its big. The Americans have been undersized up front, but have plenty of post playyers to choose from with Howard, Chandler, Cousins, Davis and Aldridge.dddddddddddd "Those are more big guys than weve had before," said Krzyzewski, noting he had James and Anthony on the floor as his two big men late in the 2012 gold-medal game. "We do have a few more options now." Half of the 28 players have already won gold in either the Olympics or world basketball championships, which was renamed for this years event. James, Anthony, Paul and Williams all have played for the last two Olympic gold-medal winners. Howard missed his chance to join them when he had to pull out of the 2012 London Games because of injury. So did Rose and Griffin -- the latter after he had made the final 12-man roster. Durant and Love were the first to announce their return last summer and are expected to play in Spain. They, along with Iguodala, Westbrook and Chandler, won gold in both 2010 and 2012. The Americans will have to trim the roster to 12 before heading to Spain. If they defend their world title, they will automatically clinch a spot for Rio. If not, they would have to play in an Olympic qualifying tournament in 2015. As in 2010, when they won the worlds for the first time since 1994, the Americans will likely feature a younger roster. But its a deep one, with the potential to bring players such as Aldridge, George and Cousins, who have been among the NBAs best this season. Then James, who began his Olympic career with a bronze in 2004, could make his way back. He and Anthony have already tied David Robinson for the most among U.S. players with their three Olympic appearances. "LeBron has an incredible opportunity to do it a fourth time and the mere fact that his name is on the roster indicates his desire and interest in continuing to have that opportunity in front of him," Colangelo said. Krzyzewski saw James on Wednesday when Duke played at Miami, and said the NBAs MVP was excited to remain involved. "For him to do it a fourth time would be just another star or asterisk next to his name and his career, and it appears thats exactly what he wants to try," Colangelo said.
